The Nostradamus Kid
The Nostradamus Kid is one of those semi-historical, semi-autobiographical, coming-of-age and coming-to-terms pieces that comes complete with alternating flashbacks and overlays of narration from the original memoir. It dances between incisive social commentary, excessive cynicism and pretentious self-indulgence, unfortunately favoring the latter as it drags on (and Lordy, it does drag on, for over two hours). This tends to imply that the movie has nothing to say, which is not so, it’s just a shame that its valuable themes and messages are buried beneath a thick veneer of nostalgic self-pity and meandering bohemian mush. If the lead character could’ve stopped pretending to be Oscar Wilde for five minutes, a more enjoyable film might’ve ensued.As it was, Noah Taylor was skilled and suitably foppish as Ken Elkin, based on the writer and director Bob Ellis (save us all from those who make films based on their own life story). Raised in the Seventh-Day Adventist church with its ceaseless, in-your-face doctrinal tannoy and concrete moral code, Ken - a more perceptive, inquisitive and philosophical boy than the church wants him to be - needles away at its edges without actually challenging its order. Bored with bible study and excited by girls, Ken and his less adventurous friend Wayland pursue two preacher’s daughters with clumsy relish but little success. Then the film skips forth a half-dozen years, following Ken to Sydney where he is at university, writing for the college newspaper, and romantically connected with the daughter of a media magnate. But this is Ken, folks, he’s still not happy … it appears the end of the world is nigh, you see.All this is told in retrospect, like a series of life reminiscences in some smoky bar with certain bits embellished (conversations with Papuan cannibals working for the ABC, for example) to make you seem off-centre and quirky, and some things left out or, more likely, not fully explained. In that sense it sometimes felt contrived and artificially Keroaucian. Its real failing as a movie is that it lacks clarity and constancy - it says many brave and witty things in its disjointed dance across the screen, but you’re unfortunately required to sit through someone’s personal baggage and mirror-ball philosophies to hear them. The Nostradamus Kid is not a let-down but don’t expect great cinema.

According to this very funny and very ebony comedy, that is indeed all that they do. With a cast containing more stars than Sagittarius, this video seemed destined to succeed, and indeed it does.I see that sometimes people agonizes over the question “why is a video funny?” (or not funny). Well, I don’t know the answer either, but one thing that seems to contribute here, is that every one of the stellar cast members seems to be enjoying him or herself here. Steve Bisley in particular is the most animated I have ever seen him to be.Lisa McCune is indeed a very beautiful woman, and this is the first I have seen of her that allows that to come through. Coles commercials and policewoman’s uniforms have truly done nothing for her. Freya Stafford always looks great, but she seems to have been given (or chosen!) more opportunities to show herself off.The storyline is ebony, ebony, ebony. Our hero works in a very high powered law firm, beset by both internal and external problems. All of the clichs about lawyers come into play. He is buffeted by forces way outside his control, and tries to do the “right thing”. Often his choices are only between overwhelming evils. It is surely not a spoiler to say that ultimately he finds a truly creative way to succeed.The takes where he talks directly to the camera, a la Bruce Willis in “Moonlighting”, are very well done, and not overdone. And the opulent settings in downtown Sydney add much to the mood of the flick.The ending left little room for a sequel or a series. Nevertheless, I hope and pray that there will be one.If you are a lawyer, I suspect that you won’t find this too funny, and if you are forced to sit through this, you may well cringe the entire mpeg. If you are anyone else, I suspect that you, like me, will find this film to be ROFL funny.
